American Chestnut Restoration Project

Randal and I were part of a group tour to an American Chestnut Restoration Project over in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Chestnut blight is a fungus that has virtually wiped out the American chestnut, as a commercial species, from eastern hardwood forests.

Once there were 4 billion of these useful trees and then the blight hit them. They provided habitat, food for wildlife, and wood that could be used for many things like fences, which are still intact in the Blue Ridge.

We learned a lot in a short time and I hope my memory held well till I got home and titled the photos. Join us on the American Chestnut Restoration Tour via my photo album of the time in Nelson County.
