Thinking Impacts Eating

by Dr. Caroline Leaf

Thinking impacts eating!

Did you know that thinking plays a huge role in eating? In fact you shouldn’t eat if you are feeling stressed, worked up, angry, facing or trying to bury a toxic thought (never a good idea anyway!), upset or dealing with major issues or decisions because the toxins generated by toxic thoughts interfere with the proper workings of the digestive system.

Now why on earth am I daring to bring up eating, as we are right into the holiday season involving a lot of eating! Eating is a highly emotional and cognitive event, so what we are currently thinking about as well as what memories have popped up from the past will not only affect our food choices, but also how our digestive system actually processes the food. This is an emotional season… and …being toxic free in spirit soul and body will make this season abundantly special (and to keep and even get rid of that excess weight!

The act of eating - and the choices involved in eating - comes first from our minds. Therefore, if we make bad and unhealthy decisions concerning food, this reflects the state of our minds. Unhealthy minds open up the door for many more problems to develop, thus it is essential to keep our minds healthy and our bodies junk food free. The two most extreme cases of the unhealthy mind-body connection, gluttony and anorexia, start in the mind.

We are thinking beings made in the image of a thinking God. Thoughts are real and God expects us to bring all thoughts under His control: "Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;" 2 Corinthians 10:5 KJV

We are thinking and building thoughts all day long and at night time we are sorting out our thoughts. Research shows that 75-98% of physical, mental, emotional and behavioral illnesses come from toxic thinking. So what we think affects our physical bodies and spiritual development and feeds back in to our minds in a continual feedback loop.

Our large and small intestines are lined with neurons, neuropeptides and receptors enabling them to respond to how we are thinking. The pancreas releases more than 20 different emotionally laden neuropeptides (brain peptides) that regulate the assimilation and storage of nutrients and whose function is affected by our thinking. A structure in the brain called the insula is very important in the translation of information between the mind and the body as well as between thoughts (memories) of the past moving into the present.

The mind is in a unique position between the spirit and the physical. It is through the mind we choose to harness the neuroplasticity God has designed in our brains and choose to rewire –or renew – our mind (Romans 12:2).

Tune into your thoughts, stand outside of yourself and observe you thoughts, words, actions and emotions but most importantly, use your mind to develop an ongoing internal conversation with the Holy Spirit about everything including what your body needs to eat, when and how much it needs and what to eat. We need to detox our thought life to detox our brain to detox our bodies and lose that excess weight or get healthier.

To help you with this I have a developed a 21-day brain detox http://21daybraindetox.com that applies both scientific and spiritual principles and is an application of the programs I used with my patients in my clinical practice to help with emotional issues, learning, trauma, anxiety, health and so on.

It takes 21 days to break down a negative toxic pattern and an additional two cycles of 21 days minimum to automatize (make a habit) of the new way of thinking. This is 63 days minimum. Most people give up at day 3 or 4. Few push beyond day 7. We can actively choose with our mind to change anything, we can actively choose to allow the Holy Spirit to help us change anything. This anything can include reaching your ideal weight.

Healing Isn't Always Instant Even For Jesus

by Donna L. Watkins

"Then He came to Bethsaida; and they brought a blind man to Him, and begged Him to touch him. So He took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the town. And when He had spit on his eyes and put His hands on him, He asked him if he saw anything. And he looked up and said, “I see men like trees, walking.” Then He put His hands on his eyes again and made him look up. And he was restored and saw everyone clearly. Then He sent him away to his house, saying,“Neither go into the town, nor tell anyone in the town.

In Mark 8:22-25 above, the story is told that in Bethsaida some people brought a blind man to Jesus and begged Him to touch him. I find it interesting that Jesus took the man by the hand and led him out of the village.  Bethsaida was a Hellenistic-Roman city and is most known for Jesus' healing a blind man that wasn't healed the first time He put His hands on him.

Preventing Bird Window Collisions

According to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, up to 1 billion birds may be killed annually by colliding with windows. By knowing how to minimize these collisions, birders can protect their backyard birds without losing the benefits of windows from which to watch them.

Despite having exceptional sight, birds have a difficult time seeing glass. Instead, they see the reflection of the sky and plants in the glass, which they think indicates a safe area to fly, particularly if they are startled or threatened.

While a strong window collision can kill a bird on impact, many times birds are stunned and appear to recover and fly away. Unfortunately, these injured birds may later suffer internal hemorrhaging and brain swelling that leads to death. Stunned birds may also be less agile fliers and more disoriented, making them vulnerable to predators. To prevent these incidents, birders can take many easy steps to make their windows more visible – and avoidable.  Read the entire article.

Hanging Out With Sinners

MINISTER GOD'S LOVE
by Andrew Wommack

Read Luke 19:1-8

Luke 19:8 "And Zacchaeus stood, and said unto the Lord; Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold."

Zacchaeus was rich but Jesus made no demands for him to give away all his goods to the poor as He did with the rich young ruler. Zacchaeus had already repented and money was no longer his god, as was revealed by his actions. It seems that Zacchaeus was going above and beyond the requirement of restitution as stated in Mosaic law by offering to give half of his goods to the poor and to repay fourfold for his theft.

Publicans were hated by their fellow Jews. They were especially despised by the religious Jews as the epitome of sinners and Jewish religious laws prevented devout Jews from keeping company with any publican. To eat with a publican was unthinkable as the Jews considered this actually partaking of the publican's sins. This is why the people reacted so adversely to Jesus eating with Zacchaeus.

Jesus did not eat at Zacchaeus' house to participate in his sin but to extend mercy and forgiveness to him. This is always the criterion whereby we can judge whether or not we should be involved in a certain situation.

We must not participate in other men's sins, but the Lord doesn't want us to retreat to monasteries either. We are the salt of the earth (Mt. 5:13), and to do any good, we have to get out of the "salt shaker." If we can be in control and minister the love of God, then we are right to associate with sinners. But when we are being controlled by the ungodliness of sinners, we need to take control or withdraw.

God Will Fix Your Mess

by Donna L. Watkins

There are a lot of hours and minutes in our lives and in the process of living it we can make some big messes. Some people get stuck in those messes of life and don't move beyond the heartache and grief of them. The devil can convince us that we're worthless after making so many mistakes. There's no way that God can use us now, so we may as well crawl into his slime pit to whine and dine.

Donna on Butterfly Bench
A Gift From Our Friend, Charlie
That's not what the Bible says about our God. From the moment of conception God had a plan for our lives and He never gives up on fulfilling it in us as long as we don't give up. We have a choice whether to follow God and desire His will for our lives and He won't interfere with that, but when we truly desire to be what He created us to be, God will always come through.

God had chosen Saul to be king over Israel, but Saul sinned and instead of repenting justified his behavior of operating in the role of a priest instead of waiting for Samuel as he was instructed. When Samuel came Saul told him that he "forced himself" to do it because of the people. So he compromised his obedience.

Mama and Daughter Deer Sunning in Backyard
View This Newsletter On the Website.

Hello Dear Friends,

With the leaves on the ground in the woods behind us, the deer spend some time with us taking a rest after drinking from the pond. This is a mother and daughter. She also has a son with little bumps on its head, but you know boys, they like to play in the dirt while girls rest.  This is one of the families we have visiting this year on a regular basis.

Having a small pond in the backyard has been such a huge blessing since water is a critical necessity for all life and we sure do see a lot of wildlife because of it. Now that my office is in the breakfast area, I've been putting sunflower seeds and corn in the "wintering over" pots that sit below one of the windows.

Rabbit Sniffing Heritage Chrysanthemums
It doesn't take a deer very long to find food, especially when they see birds and squirrels in and out of that little alcove. It gives me a real up close and personal look at them, as you can see from this photo that shows the deer only 3 feet from our window sill.

The wildlife have been storing up their bodies with any extra foods they can find. The garden beds are devoid of color other than holly berries and our bright yellow heritage mums which the rabbits have been nibbling on. The sweet bunny in the picture is sniffing the plant before taking a bite. Obviously well trained by its mother. They seem to enjoy the leaves, so we still get to have the color.

The sunrise brings the birds out early to the feeders. There's been a female Pileated Woodpecker that has been enjoying a tree that's a few feet from our deck rail. We cut it off at about 14 feet so it wouldn't fall on the rail, but would still provide food for the birds and nesting spots that give us a good view of the parenting process from egg to fledging. In the sunny afternoons there are some brave birds that bathe in the heated birdbath on the deck, but that always makes me shiver, even at 50 degrees.

What Do You See In This Picture?

From Donna L. Watkins
Artist Unknown

My friend, Rainbow, sent me this picture of Jesus that seemed very unusual to me, asking what I saw in the picture.  I responded and she sent me what her thoughts had been.  She had also received comments from another friend.  It was interesting how very different all three responses were.

So I decided to send it to a couple of friends to see what their thoughts were, and again different things were being seen in the same photo.  It really intrigued me and I wanted more responses, so I am posting the picture here so you can submit your thoughts anonymously.

The link below will take you directly to the comment form so you won't be influenced by other responses.  You can respond as Anonymous or choose another available option.

I guess we could call this an Art Appreciation assignment.  I can't wait to read your responses and I will remind you in the next newsletter to check back and view what others have written.  Submit your comment now!

Martha Missed It!

by Donna L. Watkins

We have all heard the Martha and Mary account in Luke 10:38-42. Especially those of us who would be pegged as a Martha. I have pondered this over the many years that I have been simplifying life to a state where I can keep my peace and not be busy over many things.

The more I consider what is really necessary to be on the Doing List, the more I realize that life goes a lot more smoothly if we don't travel on the maddening path of the ever-busy Western world lifestyle that seems to be a mad rush for accomplishment.

Plants Won’t Grow Near Wi-Fi Router

Five ninth grade students from Hjallerup School in Denmark conducted a science experiment that elicited profound and shocking results about the effects of cell phone radiation.

Their project was inspired by the observation that they had difficulty sleeping if their cell phones were next to their heads at night.

Using two wireless routers that emitted about the same type of radiation as an average cell phone, they filled six trays full of the garden cress (Lepidium sativum) and placed them in a room with two routers, and then placed six trays of the plant in a room without Wi-Fi routers.  Find out what transpired during their experiment.

Can We Command Angels?

Angelic Protection
by Andrew Wommack

Matthew 18:10 "Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven."

Read:  Matthew 18:10-11

We have angels assigned to us. Hebrews 1:14 further reveals that their purpose is to minister to us (i.e. on our behalf). In the Old Testament, Psalm 91 teaches on the ministry of angels to God's people.

Some have realized this truth and have taken it even further to say that we are supposed to speak to our angels and they will obey our commands. There is no instruction in scripture to do this nor is there any example of it being done. Many of the angels' protective duties described in Psalm 91 are preventative, and we certainly could not effectively command these activities.

Rather, these angels are dispatched exactly as this verse (Matt. 18:10) describes - by looking at the Father's face. God Almighty controls them for us; however, we do have a part to play.

In Psalm 91 it is those who dwell in the secret place of the Most High, that are able to benefit from angelic activity (v. 1). Verse 2 further instructs us to say that the Lord is our refuge and fortress and that we are trusting in Him.

It is the combination of our faith in God and His faithfulness to us that releases the angels on our behalf. If it was solely up to God, His provision would be the same for everyone because of His mercy and grace.

However, we have to receive God's grace by faith (Eph. 2:8). As you seek the Lord, become aware of His ministering spirits which were created to minister for us, and speak forth your faith in this area, He will send forth His angels on your behalf.

Donna Choosing Apples
Graves Mountain Apple Harvest Festival
View This Newsletter On the Website.

While our friend Charlie was visiting from Alabama, we drove up to Madison County in Virginia to check out Graves Mountain Apple Harvest Festival. It was a beautiful day for a road trip (about 80 minutes from where we live). We eat a lot of apples in the Fall and Winter, so we buy them by the bushel since we can store them in our garage to refill our refrigerator bin.

They had many types of apples but most of them were not good picking. Many of the bins had rotten apples and lots of bruises and marks on them. We were disappointed.  We had a very wet Spring and Summer, but Googling showed me that they did not have enough rain. The best looking apples were the York variety so we loaded our boxes with those.

November is the month of Thanks Giving. It's a nice focus for me as the days get colder and the sun sets so early in the day. I make a list of people I am thankful for which brightens the month realizing how very blessed I am to enjoy so many friends.  It's a nice alternative celebration of life's relationships and memories.

I happened upon a tasty and healthy recipe for the holidays called Cabbage, Walnut and Cranberry Salad. Looks pretty good since I do like cabbage. It was interesting to look at the ingredients with 1/4 cup evoo as the first one listed. How many of you know what that is? I guess it could be a familiar term to those who hang out on recipe websites, but I've cooked for so long with whatever was already in the house that I rarely consider recipes.

Cabbage, Walnut and Cranberry Salad
On my last food order I ordered a case of Tofurky Roasts and we'll be having one of those on that day with vegetarian gravy and lots of vegetables.  If you have a vegetarian in your family or may have an interest in saving the life of a turkey, you might want to consider the options that Tofurky has for holiday meals.  I admit we've never had one of these although I've known about them for many years and heard nothing but rave reviews about them. Since we don't have family in the area, Thanksgiving isn't a big meal event, so we generally make something a bit different from our usual fare and enjoy having the holiday time off work.

If anybody lives near Chapel Hill, NC, there's an annual Vegan Thanksgiving Feast that is huge.  This is their 15th consecutive year and it's an amazing event. We went a few years ago and it was truly gourmet and an incredible experience.

Speaking of North Carolina, I saw a house that would be very interesting to see in Kernersville, NC (near Winston-Salem), called Körner's Folly. The home has 22 rooms with three stories and seven levels (intriguing in itself). The ceiling heights go from 5-1/2 feet to 25 feet.

Reception Area - Körner's Folly

Jule Gilmer Körner began building in 1878. He was an interior and furniture designer, decorator and painter who wanted to showcase his talents to potential clients. He renovated constantly to show off his new creations. There are trap doors, cubby holes, and quirky corners. The neighbors were the ones who named it and they were invited to see it on Easter Day in 1880. Unusual artwork, murals, and opulence. No two doorways or windows are exactly alike.

I thought it was quite unique and certainly different from most historic homes. In 1897, Jule renovated Körner’s Folly, turning his third floor billiards room into a theater space where children in the community ages 7-13 were invited to create, rehearse, and perform on-stage performances at Körner’s Folly, directed by Polly Alice, his wife. The theater was adorned with cupid-themed murals painted by Caesar Milch. It is believed Cupid’s Park Theater was the first private little theater in America. If you're ever in that area, it may be of interest to you to see it. Visit Körner’s Folly Website.

One of my sweet friends I've come to know and love from The Nature In Us blog is Lynn Alford. She's sent me quite a few books over the years. She's a woman of God that sows good seed everywhere she goes and is one real treasure of a friend to many. The recent book I received that I am now reading is The Temple Within - Fellowship With an Indwelling Christ by Milt Rodriguez. The link to Amazon allows you to look inside and read portions of the book. Chewing on such nuggets of gold is a delight to my soul and spirit. I recommend checking it out, but this post has a few excerpts for you to ponder, which is what I've been doing as I slowly make my way from page to page.

You can also read an article I wrote with some excerpts from the book. It is titled, "Amazing Love in Christ."  God seems to be surrounding me with deeper and deeper teaching on who I am in Christ. We will still be learning this when we arrive in Heaven. Who can comprehend a Living God within themselves? It can only be revealed by the Holy Spirit within us. It's certainly not a mental feat.

Dolores, a subscriber friend in New York City, sent me a prayer that I want to share with you:

"Today may there be peace within. May you trust that you are exactly where you are meant to be. May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith in yourself and others. May you use the gifts that you have received and pass on the love that has been given to you. May you be content with yourself just the way you are. Let this knowledge settle into your bones, and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise and love. It is there for each and every one of us.” ― Teresa of Ávila

Image From Article: God Sings Over Us
Dance Before The Lord
He Delights In Your Joyfulness
Being content with ourselves just the way we are is a big leap for so many. If we could fully comprehend how much God loves us just the way we are. He has no agenda for us but to love us. If you will receive His love and His acceptance and His adoration for you, you will find that you will change in areas of life that you thought you would never be able to turn from. Allow Him to love on you and stop condemning yourself. He literally adores you and just wants to be good to you. Accept His grace gift and you will do and become everything you ever desired to be.

Look in the mirror several times a day -- at least in the morning when you get up and in the evening when you go to bed. Look at yourself eyeball to eyeball and continue to tell yourself how much God loves you! Your brain needs to hear it before you will have the faith in it. We have been presented with a picture of an angry God, but why would an angry God sacrifice His Son on a cross? Why would He come to earth to pay the price for all of our sins (past, present and future)? For so great a love.

Zephaniah prophesied of our New Covenant relationship with God and I love this portion of that prophecy of the restoration of Israel (which we are now part of through the seed of Abraham): "The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.” -- Zeph. 3:17

"Teenager" Deer - Not a Fawn and Not an Adult
View More Deer Photos
While Charlie was visiting we were having lunch on the screened porch and we thought we heard a sheep or goat bleating (characteristic cry of a goat or sheep). It only took a moment to see what was doing it, as a young deer was walking into our property. By young I mean it was past the fawn stage, but not full grown. I call them teenagers. There were no other deer around so I thought it had maybe "misplaced" its sibling since all the fawns we saw this year were twins. Seems to have been a good year for deer births in our area.

It was so cute and Randal kept telling me to take a video so we'd have the sound, but the camera was in the house and I just wanted to watch it. Actually I was quite concerned since we see deer very frequently on our property, but we've never had one doing this. I had heard the sound before in the back woods, but only a short call. This little one just kept crying as it walked. I found a very short video of a fawn bleating if you'd like to hear the sound.

Speaking of Charlie's visit, I was quite amazed at the obvious results of my brain detox programs (renewing/rewiring the mind to the obedience of Christ).  Whenever I've had company throughout my entire life, I've been a bundle of energy before they ever arrived and made long To Do lists and schedules for things they might like to do. I also had menus planned out and everything so very detailed. Don't get me wrong, I still love details and I like to plan and schedule. However, when you're trying to "guess" what company is going to like, it was surely a stress event that I considered normal for having guests.

Steel Garden Gong Made by Charlie Allred
Two days before Charlie arrived I began wondering why I wasn't in gear and going on all the preparations for his being here. My mind said, "relax, it will all be okay." Then the day before I thought it was time to clean and put things into place and my mind said, "relax, you can do that tomorrow." It's like there was no way for me to get to the starting gate of getting anxious in any way. Then the day of arrival came and I thought I'd be out of bed before dawn, but I slept a little later than usual (totally amazing) and got up, had breakfast and took care of me first, and then began to clean. It was all totally odd to me and yet it was as if that's just who I was. But I remember it is NOT who I was. So it was a great example of what's going on with these brain detoxes. Read this article for details on how it works.

What I noticed was that Charlie enjoyed his time more with me not fussing over him and having everything so well planned. I would give him some options in the morning about meals for the day and he would generally like any of the above, so that was simple. As for entertainment, he'd rather to a fix-it project than anything else and Randal had a few of those on his list.  This is the guy that has gifted us with creations from steel, such as the Butterfly Bench, Gong, Stand for 6' Wind Chimes and a Garden Hose Holder.

I've been focusing on the "joys of Winter."  This year I asked God to help me focus on good things about Winter.  I have never liked Winter or cold weather, but after having so much rheumatoid arthritis damage I surely liked it less.  I praise God that I don't have the inflammatory pain of the disease any longer, but the damage that was done has not healed yet and that makes things a bit more difficult.  We have ordered a humidifier and set it up so I'll be reporting on that in the next newsletter.  Seems it's going to provide a lot of comfort this Winter.

White-throated Sparrow
Watch a Video of This Sparrow's Song
One Winter blessing has been to see the White-throated Sparrows arrive.  They come in near the end of October and sing their pretty song all Winter long.  Seems there are some bird species that can't keep from counting their blessings also.  They come down from Canada after a Summer of mating and raising babies.  I guess they figure this is their Winter Wonderland time to be back on their own again.

There's always many things to feel blessed with every day.  One of my joys is to dust since most of what needs to be dusted has special memories or were gifts from friends.  I take a moment to reflect on the importance of relationships and to pray for the person who gave the gift.

The reason I "make" myself think about relationships is because I have always been a doer, delighting in getting something done more than time with people.  As we age I suppose we realize that friends are very special.  When we're done wiping baby bottoms and cleaning up spills, and our children are out and about with lives on their own, it's the friendships we've made that really count in life.

Until next time .... consider taking time to be thankful for the special people in your life .... and find time to give them a call or write them a note.  It could make their Thanksgiving Holiday a real blessing. Holidays are a hard time for some people, so you never know what a few kind words will mean to them.

You are a blessing to me!
