You're Not a Bad Child Any More

by Donna L. Watkins

Childhood holds a lot of wrong messages that stick with our subconscious mind for life if we don't renew it with the truth of God's Word.

I wasn't a compliant child by any stretch of one's imagination, so I'm sure I heard a lot of words about me being a naughty girl or a bad girl.  It seemed when I was old enough to go to friends' homes alone, she always had one phrase as I was going out the door, "Be good!"  I found myself saying that to my own son when I became a mother until one day I wondered what that meant?

I suppose any brain would have supposed that I was normally bad, but was now being instructed to "be good" on this occasion.

Research shows that 95% of the time our decisions and actions are made from the subconscious part of the brain.  That means that no matter what we might say or think we believe, we are actually controlled by some other more deep-rooted message that has become pretty much automated.

We can relate to this by thinking about what we might call strongholds or belief systems that seem to differ from what we think we believe.  No matter how hard we try, we can't seem to carry out or fulfill our real desires to do something differently.

As a child you were shopping with a parent and of course found something you wanted to have.  The response to asking for it may have come from a tired and weary parent who said, "No, you've not been good enough to get a new toy today."

Apparently our subconscious absorbs messages without processing them from the time of conception up to the age of 6.  So all those seemingly simple non-detrimental statements accumulate over time to build a foundation for how we live the rest of our lives.

We can react in anger and decide that we SHALL have a new toy any time we want one ... and proceed to gather up stuff and the debt that goes with it, never finding satisfaction in the new "toy" but for a short period of time before we have to have another one.

The opposite response may be to always feel unworthy to get any gift.  Since God, our Father, gives us many gifts in our salvation package, this can be very limiting on what we receive from all that God provided us with the provision of The Cross.

Although we memorize Scripture and believe that we believe it, our lives show that we are not benefiting from the belief.  What our conscious mind believes is overridden by our subconscious mind which is already programmed to respond differently.

This can relate to healing or financial matters.  The Bible says that, "By His stripes we WERE healed," but we're not healed because we don't believe we deserve it.  Jesus told us in Mark 11:23 that our faith can speak to a mountain and have it cast into the sea, but the last part of the verse also says, "and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass, he shall have whatsoever he saith."

It's very clear why we don't see results with our faith.  Our unbelief overrides our faith in so many situations.  Just as when the disciples couldn't cast out the demon in the boy and later asked Jesus why they couldn't cast it (this was after they had already been sent out by Jesus and came back rejoicing at all being healed and that the demons were subject unto them).  Jesus said to them, "Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you."

It's not faith we are lacking ... we're just too full of unbelief from being used to trusting what our physical sense tell us as truth, rather than what the Word of God tells us is Truth. When you put them both on the scales, the doubt and unbelief outweighs the faith. We believe what we've seen and heard in life more than we believe what we read in the Bible.

When Jesus came to die for our sins and put us back into fellowship with our Creator, He told us many times in the New Testament that if we see Him we see the Father.  However, most people have totally different views of who God is when they think about Jesus vs. the Father.  Many people don't even like the word 'father' due to their experiences with their earthly father.
What we have to do in the process of renewing our minds is to know that God is always and infinitely good.  That He loved us individually enough to sacrifice Himself, to leave the glory of Heaven and live in this fallen world in a human body, just so He could redeem us back into a personal relationship with Him.  That is love that cannot be fathomed on a human level.

Although we may have been a "bad girl" or "bad boy" growing up, God only sees us through the Son, Jesus, and we are as righteous as He is.  When we get born again into a new creation, we get God's actual DNA and become a child of God.  It's like we're Jesus' twin sibling.  The Father sees us as He sees Jesus and it's all in love.  God is love.

We have had too much Old Testament teaching which was under an old covenant that Jesus came to deliver us from.  We see a God that needed sin to be paid for, but in Jesus ALL of our sins are now paid.  When we try to make ourselves pay for sin or bad behavior, we nullify and count of no effect Christ's work on the Cross for us.

We are loved by God no matter what we do.  That doesn't mean we now have free license to sin, since Satan will eat your lunch if you allow him any room at all in your life, so we stay free of sin because we love our Father in return.

God is not mad at you!  You are only a "good child" in His eyes because He sees your spiritual state.  God is spirit and we must worship Him in spirit and in truth.  He doesn't look on our natural man.  He sees us in the spirit realm where we are holy, righteous and cleaned by the blood of Jesus.

You are NOT a bad child any more.  Accept yourself as you are.  We should continue to grow in grace and become more and more like Jesus in our natural man daily ... but first we must accept God's love for us and love ourselves, so we can fulfill the greatest commandments:  to love God and love your neighbor as yourself.

You are a good girl .... you are a good boy!  Papa loves you and holds you in His heart.  Reach out and get to know the REAL Father!
