Aspen Trees & The Body of Christ

From Aspen Tree Ministries.org

Aspen trees typically grow in large colonies derived from a single seedling. Each individual tree can live for 150 years above ground, but the root system of the colony is long-lived. In some cases, the colony lives for thousands of years, sending up new trunks as the old trunks die off above ground. For this reason it is considered to be an indicator of ancient woodlands.

Aspen groves are the largest living organisms on Earth, spreading about 3.3 feet per year. They are able to survive forest fires, because the roots are below the heat of the fire, with new sprouts growing after the fire burns out.

Consider the rich symbolism that the aspen tree affords us in the Christian faith. An aspen tree grove is an amazing creation of God’s divine design. While what is visible above ground is a unique and beautiful specimen of trees, what is underground is that which makes the aspen tree most unique.

The largest aspen tree in the world has 44,000 trunks in Colorado, and it grows up from underneath. An aspen grove is one continuous underground root system that sprouts new trees above ground which individually grow up to be a part of the visible aspen grove. Imagine that! An aspen grove is one single living organism connected through its root system.

Much like an aspen tree grove, the Body of Christ is one continuous living organism, connected to our Source, which is Jesus Christ.

Aspen Tree Ministries claims the imagery of an aspen tree grove, as we strive to undergird individuals and ministries with a root system which will enable them to sprout and grow effective ministries in making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.
