Groasis Waterboxx Grows Trees in the Desert

Deforestation and overfarming have helped decrease the productivity of about 70 percent of the world’s arid and semi-arid lands, which could force the migration of 50 million people by 2017.

Popular Science's choice for the 2010 innovation of the year was the Groasis Waterboxx, an irrigation-free plant incubator, that will hold four gallons of water which will water the tree for its entire first year. Although the device that looks like a fancy bucket is a bit expensive, they can be reused and they will last ten years, so it makes it cheap enough to use in very poor countries.
