Victory on Antibiotics in Animal Feed

From Food Animal Concerns Trust

I am pleased to share some very good news with you about our legal fight to stop drug abuse on farms!  We believe that this is a remarkable victory for public health, and one that will ensure that American farms are healthier and safer places to raise animals.

Last May, filed a lawsuit against the Food and Drug Administration to finally end the use of certain antibiotics in animal feed-a practice that's contributing to the rise in drug-resistant superbugs and endangering the health of our families.

Yesterday, the courts ruled in our favor!

The presiding judge ordered the FDA to begin proceedings to remove two important drugs, penicillin and tetracyclines, from animal feed unless pharmaceutical companies can prove that it is safe to use these drugs in this way.

"This is a great victory for public health" said Steven Roach, FACT's Public Health Program Manager.  "The FDA has failed to protect our families from the spread of super bugs created on farms for far too long.  Yesterday's ruling is a monumental development in our fight to end drug abuse with farm animals."

FACT is very grateful to Natural Resources Defense Council, whose legal team represented us in the lawsuit. And a very big thank you to all our supporters who have helped put pressure on the FDA to ban the use of antibiotics with healthy animals.
