Pileated Woodpecker Nest

One of our delights of woodland living is that we see so many varieties of woodpeckers. The pileated are the largest and their hairdo is representative of the Woody Woodpecker we all know from cartoons.

This year our neighbor hosted a nest in a tree that blew down two weeks after the woodpecker family departed. It was very interesting to see the inside of the nest and to imagine that huge cavity being dug out with only the chisel of the male woodpecker's beak. What a craftsman!
