Volunteers Needed to Test House Sparrow Stoppers

House Sparrows are a major threat to cavity nesting species. They can evict native species from nesting boxes or even kill other cavity nesters in territorial disputes.

To help limit the effect of this nonnative species, researcher Chris Gates, of the Salmon Creek Tree Swallow Project, is looking for several nest box monitors across the country to test out his  “sparrow stopper.”

The stopper is plastic device that prevents the larger House Sparrow from entering swallow and chickadee nest boxes, while allowing the smaller species to wiggle in.

For more information on how you can receive free sparrow stoppers for testing and contribute data to the study, visit the Tree Swallow Project’s website.
