Not Too Late for Nest Boxes

From "This Week at Hilton Pond" Newsletter

Although some female Eastern Bluebirds are already sitting on eggs here in the Carolina Piedmont, we still see pairs roaming about looking for suitable nest sites. From this we conclude it's not yet too late to build and put up new nest boxes--especially in more northerly parts of the species' breeding range.

Besides, you may still get other cavity nesters to move in--birds such as Brown-headed Nuthatches and Downy Woodpeckers.

"This Week at Hilton Pond" we approach the topic of creating artificial cavities for bluebirds and other birds that will use them. The current photo essay includes a blueprint for a simple bluebird nest box, plus lots of natural history info about bluebirds and other cavity nesters.
